Manipal Hospital Kharadi: Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery Helps Restore Vision in Pituitary Tumour Patient

Pune: Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Kharadi have successfully treated a 39-year-old woman suffering from a large pituitary tumour using endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery, an advanced minimally invasive skull-base surgical technique.

The patient had been experiencing severe headaches and progressive vision loss in both eyes, which continued to worsen despite multiple consultations with eye specialists.

A detailed neurological evaluation conducted by Dr Sachin Patil, Consultant – Neurosurgery at Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, along with a 3 Tesla MRI scan, revealed a massive non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma compressing both optic nerves at the base of the brain.

Given the tumour’s location and complexity, the medical team opted for endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery instead of conventional open brain surgery.

Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery Enables Safer Tumour Removal

Explaining the approach, Dr Sachin Patil stated that earlier such tumours were commonly treated through craniotomy or open brain surgery.

In this case, the multidisciplinary team used endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery, employing neuronavigation systems and high-definition endoscopic cameras to access and remove the tumour through the nasal cavity, without any external incisions.

This minimally invasive method allowed near-total tumour removal while preserving surrounding healthy brain tissue, resulting in faster recovery and improved postoperative quality of life.

Following the surgery, the patient showed early signs of visual improvement and significant reduction in symptoms, indicating a positive clinical outcome.

Parameswar Das, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital Kharadi, Pune, highlighted that endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery offers key advantages over traditional surgical methods, including reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and a lower risk of repeat procedures.

He noted that such outcomes reflect the hospital’s ongoing focus on delivering advanced, patient-centred healthcare.

The procedure was successfully performed by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Sachin Patil, Neurosurgeon, and Dr Vijay Sharma, Otolaryngologist, at Manipal Hospital, Kharadi.
